Montpellier 8
St Hugh's College, University of Oxford, 20-21 March 2014

Since its inclusion in Ludwigs Repertorium, and Yvonne Rokseths subsequent extensive study and facsimile publication of the manuscript, the Montpellier Codex (Bibliothque interuniversitaire, Section de mdecine, H.196) has occupied a central place in musicological scholarship on medieval polyphony. The eighth fascicle, in both its physical characteristics and its contents, has prompted diverging interpretations of its relationship to fascicles 1-7, and its place within narratives of the development of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century polyphonic composition.
We welcome papers on the following areas:

Dating, provenance, and status of Mo 8 as a collection; issues of patronage
Notation
Ars nova or Ars antiqua?
National styles
Concordances and refrains
Intertextuality and text interpretations
Tenor melodies and structures
Analytical approaches

Abstracts of 300 words should be sent to catherine.bradley at music.ox.ac.uk by 1 October 2013.
